Capelets: can they be worn by non-time travelers?

Emily capelet by Ysolda Teague.
I've always like the idea of capelets. They look so pretty and Victorian. A capelet is more steampunk than a shawl and dressier than a bolero, and IT'S NOT A MINI-PONCHO LALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU. Okay, it's kind of a mini-poncho, but more like a poncho/fancy cardigan hybrid.
I could easily make one and I'm tempted by this Ysolda Teague pattern. The cream capelet and blue dress look beautiful together in this photo, but I'm a little dubious about how to work this into my wardrobe.
Opinions? I don't want to look like a twee lunatic and I feel like I'm on thin ice.
"I don't want to look like a twee lunatic." Why the hell not? That's your best look! In fact, why are we even debating the merits of capelets? They are so obviously a win. Get on with it already.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Twee lunatic. Whee - I think that is my favourite new phrase.
ReplyDeletetwee lunatic - yes.
ReplyDeletecapelets - no, hell no.
I don't understand the purpose of the capelet - my shoulder tops don't often need more warmth than the underside of my upper arm.
ReplyDeleteBut I've been having a similar dilemma about knit and crocheted collars. I really want to make a lacy high-neck knit collar, but can't see how it fits in the wardrobe. Is the collar really just a capelet-let?
I think a collar might just be a mini-capelet!
ReplyDeleteBut I agree with your point re: arm warmth.
No. Capelets = 100% ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteLiz, I knew you would say that!
ReplyDeleteSo far Dave and Liz say no. Leanne and Curtis say yes. Kirsten questions the utility but doesn't comment on the look. Deadlock! Plus, as two well dressed ladies, Leanne and Liz cancel each other out. Dave doesn't like extreme fashion and Curtis may be kidding. Hmmm.
I'll throw my vote in with a go-ahead-and-make-one-but-don't-wear-it-out-of-the-house.
ReplyDeleteCapelets are ridiculous. Spell check doesn't like them and neither do I.
Though I will admit to a few fashion things that I was all "no way! what's the USE" about and now I embrace, like wearing a belt with a dress. I still don't approve of a belt with a shirt and leggings though.
